It all sits somewhere between nostalgia and unease. Familiar shapes, wrong context. Soft characters, hard worlds.

I cut my teeth at First Avenue running lights, VJ, and video from 2009 to 2014, then went freelance. Clubs, festivals, corporate stages. Fifteen-some years of making rooms move.

The background is doing the work.

Phosphor Baroque is a design language for apps and sites where the ornament is real. The wallpaper is a ray tracer. The frame is telemetry. The surfaces are opaque, plain, and in front. Depth is a token you can turn.

You are reading it right now. Behind this panel the scene is being traced in your CPU, quantized through the current stage's eye, and printed in this page's ink onto this page's background at a depth of 0.38. It refreshes a few columns a frame, in a shuffled order, and a dot only changes when the light gives it a reason. It never asks for attention; it rewards it.

Substrate

Layer zero. The live render, seen through the eye and pushed back with the depth token. A 1-bit stage prints dots; an 8-bit stage prints a halftone; a 2-bit stage prints four levels of red. Emissive stages print light as ink. The white stage prints shadow as ink, like paper.

The eye has persistence. A dot only flips when the light clearly crosses its threshold, the way a phosphor does not go dark the instant the beam leaves it. The dither is gradient noise rather than a grid, and columns are re-traced in a shuffled order, so there is no direction to follow and nothing for the eye to lock onto. The only motion is the sparkles, and each one is a photon.

Frame

Telemetry lives at the edges. The rule under the bar is frame time. The rail on the left is photons landed. Every panel header carries the pulse of the thing it controls: render shows rays per second, eye shows convergence, light shows photons.

Nothing in the frame is drawn for looks. If a line has 240 points, they were measured.

Surface

Content is opaque. Panels sit on the substrate in the background color, hard-edged, one pixel ruled, no radius, no shadow. Hover inverts. Focus is a two pixel ring.

Type does the talking: a condensed grotesk for words, a monospace for numbers, a 5 by 7 bitmap face for the masthead, and an italic serif for exactly one word at a time.

Persistence

Nothing is cleared. When the stage changes, the old image decays under the new one and the old name ghosts in the corner in its own phosphor for forty seconds. Toasts fade instead of vanishing. The log only grows.

Memory is a visible material, not a claim.

Rules

Nothing is stock. Every image is rendered, here, now, a few columns a frame.
Ornament is telemetry. Every border is a plot of a measured quantity.
Burn-in. Prior states decay; they are not cleared.
Color is state, and so is the eye. Each stage is a real display quantization named for a real phosphor.
Dense type, real fine print. Every number is measured or hashed.
Three reading distances. Substrate, frame, surface.
Hand-drawn is allowed only as type. Glyphs, cursors, sparkle sprites. Never picture.
Sparkles are photons. Each twinkle is a photon that landed this frame, projected through the same camera.
The substrate is wallpaper that computes. Content is opaque and in front. Depth is a token, and it is allowed to be low. Added in 003.
The background never blinks and never sweeps. Persistence is a token. A pixel needs a reason to change, and noise is not a reason; progress is not a reason either. Added in 003 after it did both.

Read from the document's computed style each time the stage changes, not typed in.

Caustics are photon mapped: photons leave a directional light, refract through the glass sphere or bounce off the chrome one, and are stored where they hit the floor. Both spheres block direct light, so the bright pool inside the glass sphere's shadow is entirely photon flux.

Eyes. Nigredo quantizes luminance to one bit against a per-pixel threshold texture (interleaved gradient noise by default, Bayer on request), with hysteresis so a dot flips only when light clearly crosses it. Albedo keeps the full eight-bit tone curve and prints shadow as ink. Rubedo quantizes to four levels, the way a 1995 stereoscope did with pulse width on a column of 224 red LEDs.
